ANAmap: a free RPG Map Editor

ANA Map will no longer be updated

This version won’t be updated anymore. You can switch to the new RPG Map 2 which gets rid of Flash and implements many features requested by users. The source code of the original ANA Map is available on GitHub.

About the old Flash version

IMPORTANT : you need a Flash Player for this version to work. So far it has been tested on Firefox 59 and Chrome. For Chrome, you may need to click this link for it to work and choose “Allow” when asked to run flash. If nothing shows, there might be an issue with the Flash player: you should check if it’s enabled and not blocked by any third party extension.

For the last 20 years, I’ve been playing tabletop RPGs with friends on a very regular basis. I’ve spent a huge amount of time writing scenarii and missions. I did it with traditional pen & papers at first, and with Google Docs afterwards.

Problem is: it’s ok to write missions with Google Docs, until it comes to drawing the map of, say, a dungeon in Dungeon & Dragons, or a haunted house in Call of Cthulhu. Most of the dedicated tools are either:

  • Old: like with a Win95 interface with almost zero attention to ergonomic
  • Bloated: the tools allows EVERY single thing related to drawing a map, and therefore, is too complicated for my simple needs.
  • Ugly: the tool uses lots of terrible textures where I just want to draw walls and doors.

For some times now, I’ve been using Photoshop to paint my maps. But let’s face it. It’s a great tool, but it has not been designed for that purpose. And it’s not free.

So I’ve decided to work on my own tool, with the sacred KiSS principle in mind (Keep it Short & Simple).

On and only issue, move the tool bar to off the map, other than that, this is hands down my fave map maker.

Why do you allow to put so many textures if the editor is unable to export that much data? I wasted more than an hour.

This is great. I've been having the same problems you've had. The only other feature I'm really looking for is a live, collaborative editing tool so you can do sharable updates to positions

A nice alternative to this is Hextml (http://hextml.playest.net/). You can even share your map in real time with your players.

This is the best map editor online. At least for me. Q: Can I use maps I make using this in products I produce online? I do not want to steal this great stuff if thats not ok. Credit would be given.

Incredibly useful, cool mapping tool! I found this to be much faster at rapid prototyping of a dungeon than the other options a quick search turned up. Thank you for taking the time to make this!

    Feature requests:
    1) Allow saving to PNG in black-and-white format.
    2) If you're using vectors, please consider saving to SVG so print size can be adjusted infinitely without loss of detail!
    3) Print-to-scale options (for direct print and print to file). The common ones seem to be 3/4" squares and 1" squares (1" for miniatures) that slice the map across multiple printed pages. I'd love to print my map out at 1" scale for my players to use in our sessions!

TREES: You don't have to place trees individually. Just hold the button down and move the cursor around – you can fill a large area very quickly. Then just "erase" any that weren't where you want them.
COLOURS: (Water, etc) Use a simple graphics program like 'Paint' to add colour.
SCROLLING: Known bug. Scrolling can erase walls once you go 'off page'.

I really like this tool, but the only thing is, I was trying to make a forest, and it took me forever to place all the trees individually. An idea I have is to number the squares in a grid, like x:36 and y: 29, and you can use an option in the tools box to fill any space between two coordinates with a certain item, like trees or stairs.

When pressing to scroll down, any walls I placed are removed. Is this a known bug? I'm running on Chrome.

Any way we could import our own textures into this? Or if I give you some textures I've made, you could add them as options? I was wanting to make a world map.

Really amazing job with this, the position that you were in when you decided to make this tool is the same one that I was in when I found this. Thankfully you had already done the work for me, and were generous enough to share.

would like it if you could start a map completely empty so it's easy to create houses and castles, and a basic pull square option, so i can make a room my holding right and left click at the same time instead of painstakingly scribbling away at the walls until you get a basic room.
