ANAmap: a free RPG Map Editor

ANA Map will no longer be updated

This version won’t be updated anymore. You can switch to the new RPG Map 2 which gets rid of Flash and implements many features requested by users. The source code of the original ANA Map is available on GitHub.

About the old Flash version

IMPORTANT : you need a Flash Player for this version to work. So far it has been tested on Firefox 59 and Chrome. For Chrome, you may need to click this link for it to work and choose “Allow” when asked to run flash. If nothing shows, there might be an issue with the Flash player: you should check if it’s enabled and not blocked by any third party extension.

For the last 20 years, I’ve been playing tabletop RPGs with friends on a very regular basis. I’ve spent a huge amount of time writing scenarii and missions. I did it with traditional pen & papers at first, and with Google Docs afterwards.

Problem is: it’s ok to write missions with Google Docs, until it comes to drawing the map of, say, a dungeon in Dungeon & Dragons, or a haunted house in Call of Cthulhu. Most of the dedicated tools are either:

  • Old: like with a Win95 interface with almost zero attention to ergonomic
  • Bloated: the tools allows EVERY single thing related to drawing a map, and therefore, is too complicated for my simple needs.
  • Ugly: the tool uses lots of terrible textures where I just want to draw walls and doors.

For some times now, I’ve been using Photoshop to paint my maps. But let’s face it. It’s a great tool, but it has not been designed for that purpose. And it’s not free.

So I’ve decided to work on my own tool, with the sacred KiSS principle in mind (Keep it Short & Simple).

I really enjoy this tool, but wish there was a path option.

Susjin – if you center click and hold you can move the map without erasing the walls.

This is fast becoming my favorite map generation tool. Simplistic, no extra terrain elements to clutter the UI, no ugly textures tossed in for no reason. A+ work, my dude.

    Found out a problem:
When i use the arrow Keys to move the map down and right, it removes all the wall that is in the opposite side, but if i do the same thing, but moving it up and left, that does not happen

    Btw, awesome tool

I find it hard to right-click on a touchpad. Could you add an alternate command to remove things?

So many possibilities! It's a great tool. Water/lava would be nice, and you could just recolor the trees. :-)

It'd be nice if you could draw maps that left the grid and/or start with a map with no walls(and a ruler would be nice).

I can't get the assets to rotate. I have tried clicking the Space Bar first, then dropping the asset in place; I have tried holding down the Space Bar, etc.

I was curious if you'd be willing to give out the source code for this so people can make modifications to their liking. Would that be possible please and thanks?

i love this but could definitely use a bigger canvas. if you too far left or right it deletes your walls!

http://hextml.playest.net/ is also a good way to draw map and manage your campaign. It's online and free and you can even share the map (with fog of war) in real time with your player.

It won't let me save as any type of file, which defeats the purpose. I wanted to display the image on my TV while my players go through the dungeon. Please fix this because I love the tool itself.

Im a quite usual GM with my friend and we use your map creator a lot. We will be very happy to see a new item to add in the maps. A windown. It will be nice to place something like the gates but in the walls. Thanks.

Hmmm… I wouldn't mind being able to make larger maps, but all in all this is a really useful tool. Thanks!
