ANAmap: a free RPG Map Editor

ANA Map will no longer be updated

This version won’t be updated anymore. You can switch to the new RPG Map 2 which gets rid of Flash and implements many features requested by users. The source code of the original ANA Map is available on GitHub.

About the old Flash version

IMPORTANT : you need a Flash Player for this version to work. So far it has been tested on Firefox 59 and Chrome. For Chrome, you may need to click this link for it to work and choose “Allow” when asked to run flash. If nothing shows, there might be an issue with the Flash player: you should check if it’s enabled and not blocked by any third party extension.

For the last 20 years, I’ve been playing tabletop RPGs with friends on a very regular basis. I’ve spent a huge amount of time writing scenarii and missions. I did it with traditional pen & papers at first, and with Google Docs afterwards.

Problem is: it’s ok to write missions with Google Docs, until it comes to drawing the map of, say, a dungeon in Dungeon & Dragons, or a haunted house in Call of Cthulhu. Most of the dedicated tools are either:

  • Old: like with a Win95 interface with almost zero attention to ergonomic
  • Bloated: the tools allows EVERY single thing related to drawing a map, and therefore, is too complicated for my simple needs.
  • Ugly: the tool uses lots of terrible textures where I just want to draw walls and doors.

For some times now, I’ve been using Photoshop to paint my maps. But let’s face it. It’s a great tool, but it has not been designed for that purpose. And it’s not free.

So I’ve decided to work on my own tool, with the sacred KiSS principle in mind (Keep it Short & Simple).

This is amazing. Sure, it has limitations, but by and far this is the easiest and most intuitive mapping tool I have ever found. I'm not sure if you're still updating it or it is just this good STILL in 2018 but I want to thank you for your work as it makes mine easier.

If you are including new tiles, water might be easy to implement – its like a tree but blue.

So, the area under the menu is dead space and can not be used…?!?

Can't figure out how to delete last comment, but it randomly allowed the export to PNG now. I have no idea why or how, but if it ain't broke don't fix it, right? :)
    Cheers anyway <3

I cannot save as PNG anymore, help? I've tried reloading the map save .json file, refreshing the page, restarting my browser, but it's not working for some reason. I'm guessing it's something simple that I am overlooking. If you're inclined to reply, you can reach me at battlebattler@gmail.com
Thank you again for this tool, it is super useful!

Really love the tool, but I just noticed a little bug. If you move down to see lower parts of the map, the walls get filled in for everything off screen. Doesn't seem to be a problem with moving the map in other directions. Thanks for the tool though!

I was struggling to find a good free map maker and this honestly saved my butt. Thank you so much I will be using it for an Aquarium Halloween Murder Mystery mini mission and it's perfect!

Thank you so much for making this simple, but extremely elegant map-maker. I don't know what I would do without it for my campaign!

Loving this tool so far, but I'm having trouble finding a way to track players and monster on the map, In know this program probably wasn't created with the intention to have this but it would be an amazing addition? the reason I'm asking is because I can't print the map and I don't have another program to use to track creatures and players – Cheers

Fantastic tool! Super useful for blueprinting out my maps. I personally draw over it in Krita to make it look nicer. An issue I've noticed is that if you right click (in order to remove an object), you are no longer able to rotate things for some reason. It fixes itself if I click off the program and back on, but it's a little tedious. I imagine that it's an issue with Flash, and would recommend replacing the "Right click to remove" with, perhaps, "Shift click" or something, to avoid this issue.

110% love this. Exactly what I have been needing for many years now. Thank you so very much, kind person! Truly generous in your skill and time, to share this with others.

One thing, however: I'm not sure if it's intentional, but the arrow keys for movement are inverted for me. Up goes down, left is right, etc. It makes navigating the map with them awkward :(

Hi, very impressive tool. My only concern is about the background color which is not white thus making the printing rather expensive. Or am I missing an option? either way it's really amazing! keep going!

    Hi,
I would suggest to add different layout in the future to create rooms in wood, metal, rock etc. to be more immersive than just "room/walls". maybe a button to change the theme (castle, house, dungeon, forest, etc.)? I do know it is for general purposes but it could be something nice to add in the future.

BUT! Even without those additions, well done! I really do like it and will use it now in the future for my quick maps.

    FOR ROLL20 USERS:
The squares scales perfectly: If your map have 20×30 squares, make sure your map size in roll20 is the same.

Hello! I love using this tool for making layouts of buildings for a comic I'm working on – it's super simple and very quick for laying out the places – but I can't seem to save the map file to edit it later! I currently use Firefox (Quantum).

    Awesome tool!
Water would be a perfect add to make your tool almost perfect for simple maps.
Keep on working, we love it!
    Thanks dude!

Love it. Only thing I miss there are square coordinates for easier orientation on field. Also the text tool has limited set of letters (can't write in czech for example). As many other there I too beg you to add water as terrain option.
But it's great, thank you man.
