ANAmap: a free RPG Map Editor

ANA Map will no longer be updated

This version won’t be updated anymore. You can switch to the new RPG Map 2 which gets rid of Flash and implements many features requested by users. The source code of the original ANA Map is available on GitHub.

About the old Flash version

IMPORTANT : you need a Flash Player for this version to work. So far it has been tested on Firefox 59 and Chrome. For Chrome, you may need to click this link for it to work and choose “Allow” when asked to run flash. If nothing shows, there might be an issue with the Flash player: you should check if it’s enabled and not blocked by any third party extension.

For the last 20 years, I’ve been playing tabletop RPGs with friends on a very regular basis. I’ve spent a huge amount of time writing scenarii and missions. I did it with traditional pen & papers at first, and with Google Docs afterwards.

Problem is: it’s ok to write missions with Google Docs, until it comes to drawing the map of, say, a dungeon in Dungeon & Dragons, or a haunted house in Call of Cthulhu. Most of the dedicated tools are either:

  • Old: like with a Win95 interface with almost zero attention to ergonomic
  • Bloated: the tools allows EVERY single thing related to drawing a map, and therefore, is too complicated for my simple needs.
  • Ugly: the tool uses lots of terrible textures where I just want to draw walls and doors.

For some times now, I’ve been using Photoshop to paint my maps. But let’s face it. It’s a great tool, but it has not been designed for that purpose. And it’s not free.

So I’ve decided to work on my own tool, with the sacred KiSS principle in mind (Keep it Short & Simple).

    Every time I scroll the screen, it resets all my rooms. Furniture remains placed.

    Thanks so much for this awesome tool! Going to make a LOT of dungeons and temples and taverns and libraries and crypts and… well, basically interior spaces and confined outdoor areas. Great job! Love it!

    This is such an awesome tool, thank you so much for it. I have been using it for weeks now and it has made my GMing life so much easier.

    This is amazing! So many map editors out there and they are all just too complex! Dungeon scribing should be simple and easy! Thank you so much for this tool. I'd love buttons and secret door marks, just general simple markings but just this simple version is great! Thank you!

    Fantastic job! I have been looking like this for years – tired of scrapping or damaging real-paper maps after spending so much time making them. I feel the same as you about most other programs – bloated, ugly, complicated. I am in the process of converting to an all (or near) digital dependency. You have done a wonderful job and I cannot wait to see this develop more. Keep up the fantastic work !

    This is amazing! Can I use this to make an example map for a kids RPG game I'm working on?

    Well, I designed a map and it was very easy and convenient. My biggest issue is I can't export it. The Export to .PNG option doesn't work on any browser I've used.

      I'll have to fix that on the next version. What OS and browser do you have?

    I absolutely love this! I'm a new DM and have been wanting a simple way to plan out my games and areas! If I may ask/request a feature? The ability to invert the entire grid, as if I have put rooms down on the whole thing for exterior maps! :D

    This is the most amazing thing ever! I have seen a lot of tools and play online a few nights a week. I run most games but play in a few others. I have tried so many tools and products that I can't remember most of them. but THIS is the best I have seen. You need to set up a patreon or something so we can help you to keep this page up. Also it would be great if you could share a collection of maps like your examples. Thank you.

    Absolutely fantastic! I've tried all of the popular online tools and none of them come close. This perfectly avoids the issues of old, bloated, and ugly systems. My go-to from now on! One feature suggestion: separate GM/Player exports.

    I offer my help! I'm a programmer using your map tool for myself. I would happily contribute to make it better. Let's talk about it.

    This mapmaker is incredible. However, you could have the best mapmaker out there, in my opinion, if you had a way to make overland maps–as some others have said, water and mountain icons would make this thing amazing.

    Fantastic tool man. I just found it. My only want (but I can work around it) is for water indicators of some type.

    That is the best map making tool I ever had to work with. I love it. The only things missing here, IMHO, are a way to add water (like a river, a pool or anything else), holes in the ground and windows (for which I use SmallFurn in walls, for the moment). A way to add sources of light (fire camp, torches…) would also be nice, but are not essential.
    Thank for everything, Deepnight, and keep up the good work ! ;)

    So, I have one issue. When png exporting, I get visual artifacts around doors. I've tried 3 browsers, and it's in all of them.

    This is just what I've been looking for! What an outstanding bit of code; truly the most useful RPG map tool on the internet.

    If I had to complain (with a gun to my head), I'd say it is missing the following fetures:
    * Text color
    * Ability to drag/drop elements (especially text)
    * A few more textures or an icon set for common map symbols
    * Downloadable desktop version

    That's all I can think of right now. Thanks so much and keep up the good work, friend!

    Hey!
    I like overall simplicity and generic output from this tool. Please consider adding 'window', because it's greatly important for my shadowrun missions.
    Options, to "colour" furnitures would also be great IHMO!

    Cheers and thank you for this tool
