ANAmap: a free RPG Map Editor

ANA Map will no longer be updated

This version won’t be updated anymore. You can switch to the new RPG Map 2 which gets rid of Flash and implements many features requested by users. The source code of the original ANA Map is available on GitHub.

About the old Flash version

IMPORTANT : you need a Flash Player for this version to work. So far it has been tested on Firefox 59 and Chrome. For Chrome, you may need to click this link for it to work and choose “Allow” when asked to run flash. If nothing shows, there might be an issue with the Flash player: you should check if it’s enabled and not blocked by any third party extension.

For the last 20 years, I’ve been playing tabletop RPGs with friends on a very regular basis. I’ve spent a huge amount of time writing scenarii and missions. I did it with traditional pen & papers at first, and with Google Docs afterwards.

Problem is: it’s ok to write missions with Google Docs, until it comes to drawing the map of, say, a dungeon in Dungeon & Dragons, or a haunted house in Call of Cthulhu. Most of the dedicated tools are either:

  • Old: like with a Win95 interface with almost zero attention to ergonomic
  • Bloated: the tools allows EVERY single thing related to drawing a map, and therefore, is too complicated for my simple needs.
  • Ugly: the tool uses lots of terrible textures where I just want to draw walls and doors.

For some times now, I’ve been using Photoshop to paint my maps. But let’s face it. It’s a great tool, but it has not been designed for that purpose. And it’s not free.

So I’ve decided to work on my own tool, with the sacred KiSS principle in mind (Keep it Short & Simple).

Idea: Add a "save to public" button. Let those who choose to, save to a searchable database of maps. And, along with that, let us search the files by title. People looking for a "cave" or "castle" for examples can look through creations of others. Just a thought.

Thanks for sticking this online for people to use. It's a great tool and easy to make maps with.

I have added this tool to my website for my own d20 style universal RPG, https://fyxtrpg.com . This will be a great tool for my players. Thanks again!

    This is fantastic.

If i might make a request, I make my own maps using roll20, and the ability to maybe export larger images is definately something I could use.

That being said, this is awesome. +1.

Love the map maker. A perfect blend of utility and simplicity. If you added a few more tile types, like water, it would be even better. Thank you!

Fantastic tool, I am already using this as my primary map making tool.

I have encountered some odd issues when I export the map to PNG, it generates a sort of discolored border around some of the tiles. It usually is just a quick adjustment in an image editor, but it's something to note.

I too find the concept of a river/water tile, ideally that is dynamic like the wall tiles, appealing.

Brilliant and easy to use especially useful as a player mapping tool. Would be great to be able to set the map dimensions in squares horizontal and vertical as this would be useful to make sure when using for player mapping you wont run out of room is the DM has a certain size piece of paper.

There must be some ability to increase size as currently you can map off the edge – really hard to undo the map if you are flying blind like that however so would be good to have a solid border as well

Echo comments around being good to be able to add own Assets but even so this is pretty darn good even as it is with the assets you have

I ran across this tool while searching for a simple map creator for RPG tabletop games. Thank you sir for a fantastic tool.

I look forward to any updates you might make to this wonderful product.

It's a really great tool and obviously the easiest to use. Like most people said, it really need more options (water for example but everybody already told you that) so, can't wait to see more contents. I look forward for the upgrades but like I said, amazing map creator! Thank you.

Fantastic. I love it. Simple to use, easy enough to let me do what I want.

I read what you wrote under the editor, and it reflected my problem exactly. Complete with the same opinions. I have actually been toying around with the idea of making an editor like this in my friends Java game engine.

You've pretty much hit the nail on the head as far as I'm concerned.

This is excellent! Extremely usable, and the json import/export makes it perfect for extensibility.

On that note, do you have an API document of some kind that describes how the map structure of the json is formatted? I'd love to write an export function for my dungeon generator that allows them to be imported here for modification by GMs, but the coordinate layout feels wonky.

    Thanks!

It's great, thank you very much. But one major problem; if I scroll the map up or down too far, which is not immediately evident, the map is destroyed as it is scrolled off of the grid.

I have yet to find an easier to use map tool online. I agree with many others, though, and more textures would be great. Water is the main one that comes to mind.

Can we add more types of textures? Or at least different colors.

This is seriously amazing. Just the best simple mapmaker tool on the webs. Easily saves in an editable format or a printable format.
I'd love to see a water-addition (for underground pools, etc) and a simple trapdoor (similar to the door tool).

Other than that, this has been a godsend. THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS.

This is, by far, the best dungeon mapping tool I have found. It took just a few minutes to master, and I am making in minutes dungeons that would have taken 5 times longer to create by hand or with the other map making tools floating around. Well done, sir!

Given the tiny size of the map's .json file, it would be nice if you allowed people to save map's on your web site to share with others (like your examples). No need to recreate a standard warehouse when others have done it a dozen times. I have seen other mapping sites do this, but most of the results are overly bloated.
