ANAmap: a free RPG Map Editor

ANA Map will no longer be updated

This version won’t be updated anymore. You can switch to the new RPG Map 2 which gets rid of Flash and implements many features requested by users. The source code of the original ANA Map is available on GitHub.

About the old Flash version

IMPORTANT : you need a Flash Player for this version to work. So far it has been tested on Firefox 59 and Chrome. For Chrome, you may need to click this link for it to work and choose “Allow” when asked to run flash. If nothing shows, there might be an issue with the Flash player: you should check if it’s enabled and not blocked by any third party extension.

For the last 20 years, I’ve been playing tabletop RPGs with friends on a very regular basis. I’ve spent a huge amount of time writing scenarii and missions. I did it with traditional pen & papers at first, and with Google Docs afterwards.

Problem is: it’s ok to write missions with Google Docs, until it comes to drawing the map of, say, a dungeon in Dungeon & Dragons, or a haunted house in Call of Cthulhu. Most of the dedicated tools are either:

  • Old: like with a Win95 interface with almost zero attention to ergonomic
  • Bloated: the tools allows EVERY single thing related to drawing a map, and therefore, is too complicated for my simple needs.
  • Ugly: the tool uses lots of terrible textures where I just want to draw walls and doors.

For some times now, I’ve been using Photoshop to paint my maps. But let’s face it. It’s a great tool, but it has not been designed for that purpose. And it’s not free.

So I’ve decided to work on my own tool, with the sacred KiSS principle in mind (Keep it Short & Simple).

Tony, unless I'm missing something, no need to clear anything at all, right? Just start placing obstacles and don't use the room/walls tool. The rooms are purely visual so imagine the untouched field as a big flat space.

Could you put a button that flips all the tiles from filled to unfilled. I really like to do out door adventrues and this would help greatly with building creation rather than having to clear everything by hand first. Love the tool!

I really like the mapping tool. Easy to use and while there are not a lot of icon choices it is sufficient. Would like to see a vastly larger work space. I am working on a Cypher System SciFi game and need to build large bases and spacecraft interiors.

I'm thinking that my map is using too many assets so it is failing in the export. Any ideas?

Yes, that's certainly the problem here… I cannot fix that in this version because it's mostly a problem with the way I designed this software :-( I will address this issue in the next version which will be rewritten from scratch

Very cool – but I'm having issues exporting my file. It worked fine when the file was smaller, but now that it takes up about half the area it just won't export as PNG.

Hey man – love your work, but as Utherix has pointed out, if you scroll down, everything that has gone off the page upwards is covered in "wall". It kinda sucks. Other than that though, awesome job. Thanks heaps for making this!

Kid, I wanna throw money at you- and support the development of this tool and the philosophy behind it. How can I do that, or what more can you tell me about this program?

First off this tool is amazing. It's simple, it looks clean, and it save me from gouging out my eyes from looking at the textures of most of the other map makers out there. With that being said I only have one complaint which is that you can scroll, seemingly endlessly, across the map….and replace all of the walls you've taken off the map. Rip 1/2 my town. Smaller chunks it is! (Use arrow keys to scroll while editing your map. Scroll at your own risk)

Fantastic App. This is great for making quick and excellent maps. Only thing that would make it easier is a bucket/flood fill to draw the outline of a room and just fill it in automatically.

… I can not believe I just now thought of this, but here it is.
Have a custom furniture tool, like the walls tool, but with the furniture blue.

Also I have to restate this, because this really is the best mapping tool I have found. No other stands up to this one.

Hey, I'm using this tool for a little forum RP I'm doing and it's great for the little project I'm doing! A few suggestions however:

    1) Just a plain marker. Like the blur option, but without the blur
    2) Different coloured x's, so I can mark beginning locations
    3) Able to start the map with it empty
    4) Scale-able maps
    5) Some more assets. I could use some grass, since I'm using this for outdoor stuff

Okay, that's more than a few but it's some thing's that I'd like. Thanks!

ANAmap is amazing. I would love to be able to see other peoples' creations! Also, It'd be even more useful/fun if there were block types like "pit" and "water". Or better yet, the ability to make your own block type. Select a color, give it a name. :)

Great tool! I love just playing with it.

This is the best map making too I have found, thus far. :D
But if I may be so bold as to make a few suggestions, :)

The first there needs to be a way to scale the map, I am gunna need to make 4 maps for one location and it would be nice to have everything on one map, over all kinda nbd, but it would be nice. :)

Second, get a copy of an old D&D map Key, and add a token for each item on the key. Portcullis, water (MY KINGDOM FOR WATER XD), statue, pit, and a hand full of other simple icons.
    https://cf.geekdo-images.com/images/pic1008026.png (Is pretty good)

And last if it would be possible to move the tools and menu off of the map… its just artificially limits the size of the map. :)

And again this is an awesome map tool. :D
