ANAmap: a free RPG Map Editor

ANA Map will no longer be updated

This version won’t be updated anymore. You can switch to the new RPG Map 2 which gets rid of Flash and implements many features requested by users. The source code of the original ANA Map is available on GitHub.

About the old Flash version

IMPORTANT : you need a Flash Player for this version to work. So far it has been tested on Firefox 59 and Chrome. For Chrome, you may need to click this link for it to work and choose “Allow” when asked to run flash. If nothing shows, there might be an issue with the Flash player: you should check if it’s enabled and not blocked by any third party extension.

For the last 20 years, I’ve been playing tabletop RPGs with friends on a very regular basis. I’ve spent a huge amount of time writing scenarii and missions. I did it with traditional pen & papers at first, and with Google Docs afterwards.

Problem is: it’s ok to write missions with Google Docs, until it comes to drawing the map of, say, a dungeon in Dungeon & Dragons, or a haunted house in Call of Cthulhu. Most of the dedicated tools are either:

  • Old: like with a Win95 interface with almost zero attention to ergonomic
  • Bloated: the tools allows EVERY single thing related to drawing a map, and therefore, is too complicated for my simple needs.
  • Ugly: the tool uses lots of terrible textures where I just want to draw walls and doors.

For some times now, I’ve been using Photoshop to paint my maps. But let’s face it. It’s a great tool, but it has not been designed for that purpose. And it’s not free.

So I’ve decided to work on my own tool, with the sacred KiSS principle in mind (Keep it Short & Simple).

Why do I have to look at 500 comments to use this program, that defeats the purpose of it being light weight?

Hello, this is an amazing tool! just created a map for the first campaign I will be DMing.I hope we'll see more assets in a future update, such as water. It would be great if you could rotate assets diagonally as well ^^ Anyway, this was very easy and intuitive to use. Thank you!

There should be some sort of cloning element.
It would also be nice if you could have more than one level. There would be a level bar on the side and you could scroll up or down. This would make multi-level structures easier to build! (Note: I am drawing a mansion… without 3D mapping, it is very hard)

Really nice and simple map maker. Love the results! However, some text elements are getting cut off when I export a PNG or try to print. What can I do to retain them on the final image? Some are labels one stairs leading off map, etc. Thanks for creating this!

It's working and fine. It's one of the best I've found mostly because it works and it's free. A little bit more content would do it great I think but this is great for new DM/GM's who don't draw. 9/10 Rating.

Having trouble rotating assets. The editor is amazing though. I would love to see it come with more assets as an option/toggle so we can choose to keep it simple or add in lots of details. Still, it's an amazing tool to have.

Like you map editor so much – keep on your good work and provide us with more "simple" assets. Water & fire would be great. Change colors on assets would be nice too. Thanks for your great work!

I love the look of this tool and how easy it is to use. As a first-time Dungeon Master, it really helps to have a dungeon planning utility. Especially, since my drawing ability is somewhat lacking.

That said it would be nice to have the ferns be green and to have things like trap doors, hidden walls, and the ability to change the colour of assets.

There are a few other things, but those are the ones I would feel the most useful. Otherwise, good job. :D

    Nice tool.
Hope for more assets like Water, wood walls, secrets …
Maybe some export Settings like "Playermap; Gamemastermap" where you can hide ome Assets.
And something like export as png for the whole map, not only what is visible at the screen.

All in all is this tool very good. Easy to use after a little bit playing with the Controls.
    Keep it ongoing ;-)
