ANAmap: a free RPG Map Editor

ANA Map will no longer be updated

This version won’t be updated anymore. You can switch to the new RPG Map 2 which gets rid of Flash and implements many features requested by users. The source code of the original ANA Map is available on GitHub.

About the old Flash version

IMPORTANT : you need a Flash Player for this version to work. So far it has been tested on Firefox 59 and Chrome. For Chrome, you may need to click this link for it to work and choose “Allow” when asked to run flash. If nothing shows, there might be an issue with the Flash player: you should check if it’s enabled and not blocked by any third party extension.

For the last 20 years, I’ve been playing tabletop RPGs with friends on a very regular basis. I’ve spent a huge amount of time writing scenarii and missions. I did it with traditional pen & papers at first, and with Google Docs afterwards.

Problem is: it’s ok to write missions with Google Docs, until it comes to drawing the map of, say, a dungeon in Dungeon & Dragons, or a haunted house in Call of Cthulhu. Most of the dedicated tools are either:

  • Old: like with a Win95 interface with almost zero attention to ergonomic
  • Bloated: the tools allows EVERY single thing related to drawing a map, and therefore, is too complicated for my simple needs.
  • Ugly: the tool uses lots of terrible textures where I just want to draw walls and doors.

For some times now, I’ve been using Photoshop to paint my maps. But let’s face it. It’s a great tool, but it has not been designed for that purpose. And it’s not free.

So I’ve decided to work on my own tool, with the sacred KiSS principle in mind (Keep it Short & Simple).

Something really wonderful would be the option to color tiles, or if there were multiple options for small assets. I know this is simply supposed to be a simple blueprint tool, but something like that would improve what's possible very easily. Other than that small suggestion, I love the tool. Definitely going to use it more.

How do you rotate the door?

A basic color option for a single square would be nice/helpful. That would allow for water parts, swamp parts, or any other part that needs to be denoted as different. Either way, I will certainly be using this tool for a while.

I would recommend a water tile option, a ruler option just to count squares, and a zoom in and out tool

I am trying to make a D&D map involving tridents and fish, but it is extremely hard without a water tile… Please add a water tile so that modules like this will be possible… thank you!

This is a very excellent tool, and works rather well compared to most tools I have used. While a "water" asset would be excellent to have, I would like for some method of selecting multiple tiles at a time as opposed to being restricted to single tile selection when adding or removing walls.

Alternatively, if there is a way to export maps at a specific resolution, that would work as a great replacement if adding the ability to select multiple tiles at once would be too difficult for a project this small.

If there is no method of doing this, adding this would make it a much better experience. I like to build large maps for my parties that often have many soldiers.

OMG, this is the perfect tool for making quick maps. I have a full time job, and kids, so I don't have the time to spend hours on maps. I agree the only thing missing is a water asset, but I just put my map in dark theme, and used the big dirt as water. Thanks again for making this.

I love this tool, quick and easy to use! I agree with Mallium, a water asset would be fantastic.

Excellent tool, I really thank you.
On a side note: the spacebar-rotation is kinda buggy, and requires several refreshes of the page to make it work. Fortunately the work done doesn't get lost on refresh

I've been using this tool for 3+ years of DMing D&D and it's seriously the best. Simple, easy and clear to use without any of the time-wasting fluff on so many other map tools. Just fantastic. Only ask – a way to put in water pools (like trees!), but even without it, this tool is amazing.

I'm having difficulty with the export, it is only exporting half of my map to PNG?
