ANAmap: a free RPG Map Editor

ANA Map will no longer be updated

This version won’t be updated anymore. You can switch to the new RPG Map 2 which gets rid of Flash and implements many features requested by users. The source code of the original ANA Map is available on GitHub.

About the old Flash version

IMPORTANT : you need a Flash Player for this version to work. So far it has been tested on Firefox 59 and Chrome. For Chrome, you may need to click this link for it to work and choose “Allow” when asked to run flash. If nothing shows, there might be an issue with the Flash player: you should check if it’s enabled and not blocked by any third party extension.

For the last 20 years, I’ve been playing tabletop RPGs with friends on a very regular basis. I’ve spent a huge amount of time writing scenarii and missions. I did it with traditional pen & papers at first, and with Google Docs afterwards.

Problem is: it’s ok to write missions with Google Docs, until it comes to drawing the map of, say, a dungeon in Dungeon & Dragons, or a haunted house in Call of Cthulhu. Most of the dedicated tools are either:

  • Old: like with a Win95 interface with almost zero attention to ergonomic
  • Bloated: the tools allows EVERY single thing related to drawing a map, and therefore, is too complicated for my simple needs.
  • Ugly: the tool uses lots of terrible textures where I just want to draw walls and doors.

For some times now, I’ve been using Photoshop to paint my maps. But let’s face it. It’s a great tool, but it has not been designed for that purpose. And it’s not free.

So I’ve decided to work on my own tool, with the sacred KiSS principle in mind (Keep it Short & Simple).

I think this might be one of the best map makers I've ever seen! It's simple, easy to learn and quick! The only thing I would suggest adding is the option for bigger maps.

Im loving this, im using this to make the bloueprint for 3 mansions for a tabletop session.
If i had toa sk soemhing maybe the opetion to copy/cut/paste certain sections to make the mirroring easier (havea masnion fo 2 floors, each have 8 interior sectiosn in acircle, and each is 16×16 blocks)

Though with a little bit of practice I've been able to do 4-mini maps and combine them into a single one. I like this tool so much to the point I am already planning to do a small city with this map alone.

That's how into this minimalistic map-maker. I wish I could just throw my money at you because THIS is worth it.

Having the option to have a bigger map size would be a dream.

Amazing. Easy to use and exactly what I was looking for – a tool to draw simplified dungeon maps. In order to not spoil the simplicity, I think I would only add additional floor textures/colors (3 options total should be sufficient) and that would make it perfect.

This little map maker is wonderful. It's pretty much exactly what I need. Simple and clean. However I only have two real requests that severely limit it. The most important (to me) being that you cannot make maps over a certain size before it erases previous work. I'd love to use this to slowly construct a massive map but it simply wont let me. The second is that right clicking to delete things seems to behave strangely and the map will no longer pan with arrows and you cannot rotate things after clicking it.

Beyond that, it'd be lovely to see a smoother way to move the map around, perhaps export bigger images (Entire map) for big works and perhaps a zoom function?
