ANAmap: a free RPG Map Editor

ANA Map will no longer be updated

This version won’t be updated anymore. You can switch to the new RPG Map 2 which gets rid of Flash and implements many features requested by users. The source code of the original ANA Map is available on GitHub.

About the old Flash version

IMPORTANT : you need a Flash Player for this version to work. So far it has been tested on Firefox 59 and Chrome. For Chrome, you may need to click this link for it to work and choose “Allow” when asked to run flash. If nothing shows, there might be an issue with the Flash player: you should check if it’s enabled and not blocked by any third party extension.

For the last 20 years, I’ve been playing tabletop RPGs with friends on a very regular basis. I’ve spent a huge amount of time writing scenarii and missions. I did it with traditional pen & papers at first, and with Google Docs afterwards.

Problem is: it’s ok to write missions with Google Docs, until it comes to drawing the map of, say, a dungeon in Dungeon & Dragons, or a haunted house in Call of Cthulhu. Most of the dedicated tools are either:

  • Old: like with a Win95 interface with almost zero attention to ergonomic
  • Bloated: the tools allows EVERY single thing related to drawing a map, and therefore, is too complicated for my simple needs.
  • Ugly: the tool uses lots of terrible textures where I just want to draw walls and doors.

For some times now, I’ve been using Photoshop to paint my maps. But let’s face it. It’s a great tool, but it has not been designed for that purpose. And it’s not free.

So I’ve decided to work on my own tool, with the sacred KiSS principle in mind (Keep it Short & Simple).

Amazing tool. The only thing I would add. The page starts "full" of wall and you take out empty space, great for dungeons. I would love an empty page where you draw walls, to draw buildings. Right now you have to clear the whole page by hand.

This tool is nearly perfect, if it just had a measuring tool and a way to set the total map size that would be everything I need. For the time being I use the 4×1 furniture to measure distances.

Anyone know if there's a way to draw large boxes quickly? Without having to do every single square? Like a box tool?

You actually have a "door" tool on the left side :) You can rotate it using SPACE bar.

Any chance we could have downloads at a higher resolution? It'd be nice to pull these into Roll20/Fantasy Grounds and have them look neat & tidy :)

Uma forma mais fácil de remover o que fora adicionado tipo as portas, pode coloca-las ou remove-las quando achar que for necessário sem ficar voltando.

Wonderful tool, thank you so much for giving this to us. A couple of simple additions would be fantastic such as mountains, rocks, water, sand etc. But as it is it will serve my first ever DM role perfectly.

It's rare to find a map editor that doesn't have a GUI like a space shuttle dashboard. Fantastic program!

Just noticed a bug. When you scroll your map outside of the viewport, the background room/wall resets. Not a problem if working on a small map, but an issue for bigger maps. Still, a great tool, keep up the good work!

Fantastic, just what I have been looking for, so simple to use, very flexible as well. And free!

Really excellent and perfectly simple. I would really love to be able to add pits in the floor.

Is there any way to start with an open space, and then add walls? It seems right now like you start with a walled space and then remove to make walkways.
