ANAmap: a free RPG Map Editor

ANA Map will no longer be updated

This version won’t be updated anymore. You can switch to the new RPG Map 2 which gets rid of Flash and implements many features requested by users. The source code of the original ANA Map is available on GitHub.

About the old Flash version

IMPORTANT : you need a Flash Player for this version to work. So far it has been tested on Firefox 59 and Chrome. For Chrome, you may need to click this link for it to work and choose “Allow” when asked to run flash. If nothing shows, there might be an issue with the Flash player: you should check if it’s enabled and not blocked by any third party extension.

For the last 20 years, I’ve been playing tabletop RPGs with friends on a very regular basis. I’ve spent a huge amount of time writing scenarii and missions. I did it with traditional pen & papers at first, and with Google Docs afterwards.

Problem is: it’s ok to write missions with Google Docs, until it comes to drawing the map of, say, a dungeon in Dungeon & Dragons, or a haunted house in Call of Cthulhu. Most of the dedicated tools are either:

  • Old: like with a Win95 interface with almost zero attention to ergonomic
  • Bloated: the tools allows EVERY single thing related to drawing a map, and therefore, is too complicated for my simple needs.
  • Ugly: the tool uses lots of terrible textures where I just want to draw walls and doors.

For some times now, I’ve been using Photoshop to paint my maps. But let’s face it. It’s a great tool, but it has not been designed for that purpose. And it’s not free.

So I’ve decided to work on my own tool, with the sacred KiSS principle in mind (Keep it Short & Simple).

Correction to last post, about editing text: The problem with editing text also arises after having used right click to delete an object.

    Thanks again.

This is a great tool! Best dungeon map making tool I have come across. Making maps is so fast, easy and intuitive, and the finished product actually looks really nice, even though it's simple.
So, I hope you are still developing this, as there are a couple of small problems: Firstly, after using right click to delete an object, rotating with space no longer works, though it works again if I save the map. Secondly, I can't type in text…

But anyway… all in all this is great, so thank you for this!

This solves a lot of problems for me as a DM. This tool is simple, easy to use and understand, and gets the job done. The only reason I would hand-draw maps at this point would be to get curves in and things like that.

ok, so one of the things I want to say is that it works really well. if it doesn't come up first, then look in the top right corner under the bar and you should see a use flash player if it doesn't come up you either need to get, update flash, or click to activate if you have a mac/have it set to certain sites can use it.

  13. Mario:

Ok, so I learnt that if you scroll your map too far to the right or up is deletes what you've done :( Just be careful if you want to make a big map

Hi, I've been using your map maker for a while but for some reason it doesn't seem to be working now. The screen is blank where the editor usually is.

The screen is blank for me, it used to work but now it is gone. What can I do to get it back?

This is so great! Please I agree with the other comments, like a scaleable wall maker and more assets in the same style as the trees and dirt, maybe water (in multiple colors) and spiral stairs, circular "furn" and diagonal walls by holding space.

    Oh and circular "furn"

Hi, this is by far one of the cleanest and simplest mapping tools I've seen and I really like the 'blueprints' tone of Dark Theme.

Are there plans for this to be developed any more? Some additional assets would be brilliant. Also a way to enlarge the room/walls pointer would be brilliant as blocking out large areas takes a lot of time.

    Thanks.

This is great! Any chance an option for hexes can be included?
