ANAmap: a free RPG Map Editor

ANA Map will no longer be updated

This version won’t be updated anymore. You can switch to the new RPG Map 2 which gets rid of Flash and implements many features requested by users. The source code of the original ANA Map is available on GitHub.

About the old Flash version

IMPORTANT : you need a Flash Player for this version to work. So far it has been tested on Firefox 59 and Chrome. For Chrome, you may need to click this link for it to work and choose “Allow” when asked to run flash. If nothing shows, there might be an issue with the Flash player: you should check if it’s enabled and not blocked by any third party extension.

For the last 20 years, I’ve been playing tabletop RPGs with friends on a very regular basis. I’ve spent a huge amount of time writing scenarii and missions. I did it with traditional pen & papers at first, and with Google Docs afterwards.

Problem is: it’s ok to write missions with Google Docs, until it comes to drawing the map of, say, a dungeon in Dungeon & Dragons, or a haunted house in Call of Cthulhu. Most of the dedicated tools are either:

  • Old: like with a Win95 interface with almost zero attention to ergonomic
  • Bloated: the tools allows EVERY single thing related to drawing a map, and therefore, is too complicated for my simple needs.
  • Ugly: the tool uses lots of terrible textures where I just want to draw walls and doors.

For some times now, I’ve been using Photoshop to paint my maps. But let’s face it. It’s a great tool, but it has not been designed for that purpose. And it’s not free.

So I’ve decided to work on my own tool, with the sacred KiSS principle in mind (Keep it Short & Simple).

Its an excelent toll, but i think if you add some way to draw Water and some icons (like a Skull to mark the Boss room), ow and a way to organize the names after right them, except for this observation the Tool Is Fantastic, and easy to work in on

Great tool, been using it for my DnD games for the last few months and its much better than trying to find a map that fits the image in my head. Just wanted to leave a comment thanking the creator. All hail KiSS

Very nice. Fast and simple map drawing. But water is still missing.

Going down or left fucking puts in wall – its annoying and ruins ages of work – other then that its ok

Brilliant but I want to draw a pool, maybe a simple circle template? Just a suggestion. It's pretty cool as is. I see myself using this all the time.

Nevermind. I fixed it! Updating the flash player worked. Should've tried that before.

It doesn't seem to be loading for me. I've tried many different browsers and waited forever. :(

    Thank You! Thank You!
I've been hand drawing and scanning maps for my online Fantasy Grounds session and in a very short time I was able to use this to create 2 key maps for upcoming session. I was able to do it in less time than hand drawn and that says a lot for an application. I don't think you should mess around with colors as others suggested – simple is clearly better here. My one suggestion with is in sync with the tool philosophy would be to add:
Windows – this is a key and simple map element when making buildings.
Water – also a key simple element (I've used SmallDirt to represent water though on one map and it works).
Otherwise this is simple design perfection and I applaud you!

Great tool! Can you have a picture on background, so you can draw your map on top of it?

Thank you for this tool, it is wonderful. I feel as though adding colors to the furniture options would add a lot of flexibility to the maps and let you delineate various things on the map from each other. Happy gaming!

Simple, and sturdy! The only suggestions I would love to see, is colored furniture. Atleast two kinds, like brown for wood, and grey for stone. and maybe different 'field/background' colors, like green backdrop for grass, grey for stone dungeons, and blue for water
