ANAmap: a free RPG Map Editor

ANA Map will no longer be updated

This version won’t be updated anymore. You can switch to the new RPG Map 2 which gets rid of Flash and implements many features requested by users. The source code of the original ANA Map is available on GitHub.

About the old Flash version

IMPORTANT : you need a Flash Player for this version to work. So far it has been tested on Firefox 59 and Chrome. For Chrome, you may need to click this link for it to work and choose “Allow” when asked to run flash. If nothing shows, there might be an issue with the Flash player: you should check if it’s enabled and not blocked by any third party extension.

For the last 20 years, I’ve been playing tabletop RPGs with friends on a very regular basis. I’ve spent a huge amount of time writing scenarii and missions. I did it with traditional pen & papers at first, and with Google Docs afterwards.

Problem is: it’s ok to write missions with Google Docs, until it comes to drawing the map of, say, a dungeon in Dungeon & Dragons, or a haunted house in Call of Cthulhu. Most of the dedicated tools are either:

  • Old: like with a Win95 interface with almost zero attention to ergonomic
  • Bloated: the tools allows EVERY single thing related to drawing a map, and therefore, is too complicated for my simple needs.
  • Ugly: the tool uses lots of terrible textures where I just want to draw walls and doors.

For some times now, I’ve been using Photoshop to paint my maps. But let’s face it. It’s a great tool, but it has not been designed for that purpose. And it’s not free.

So I’ve decided to work on my own tool, with the sacred KiSS principle in mind (Keep it Short & Simple).

This is great! Easy and simple. Making a Numenera map for a game tonight. Big Ups!

Dude, this is PERFECT. It's exactly what I've been looking for. As is, it's a great minimap or dungeon maker for tabletop RPGs, and if you ever wanted to put more content in it, it could get widespread use for all types of mapping stuff. It's definitely gonna see a lot of use in my games going forward, thank you so much.

I love this! If you could add a drag and drop ability for text and objects that would be so helpful.

This really is marvelous and saved so much time for me. Amazing in creating a good looking map in mere minutes. I really can't understand who has the time to use those "better" tools, with which you have to spend hours to make you map look decent.

This is fantastic! I totally understand the KiSS principle, but there are three things that I sorely miss with this program. Water, really just a blue overlay on the ground, secret doors, and trap markers.

Really though, this is just fantastic. Thanks so much.

Awesome work, so easy to use and so useful!
Is there any way we could get an offline toll like this?

Ideally, there would be thin walls that could be placed on the grid lines, and the doors would also be on the actual grid lines. Y'know… like how one would make a maze on graph paper. Like the thin walls/doors in this map, for example: https://nerdsonearth.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/StarterSet_10.jpg

This is genuinely the best, most intuitive map designer software I have seen so far, and I have seen dozens, but that one design flaw makes it less than ideal. Also, a click & drag rectangle would be a much better sytstem for filling in/erasing the main squares, since it would be much faster forr making both straight hallways and large rooms.

Great stuff! Would be nice to be able to move text, but that's not the end of the world. Thank you for providing this!

Only thing I could see being improved would be maybe a zoom in and out option to help with eye strain, and I wish you could rotate and Drag and Drop Text. Not everything is a perfect square and doing it based on a grid can at times be unsightly unless everything is perfectly symmetrical. Otherwise, really love the software. Combined with this and Dungeon Painter Studio, this takes what used to be 2 hours of sketching and turns it into maybe 15 minutes of fiddling. Thanks!

I'm actually rather glad for Mipui's version, in this day and age I rarely have a need to install the old and bloated Flash player, and it saddens me when I do find the odd place still using dated and propitiatory technology.

Very cool tool/idea! However, there are strange graphical patterns around doors and walls when exporting to PNG or Printing to PDF. This occurs with both Edge and IE. I could not get the app to run in Firefox.

Excellent tool. One suggestion – can we get a dimension measurement (i.e. 4×7) when dragging a room square?
