ANAmap: a free RPG Map Editor

ANA Map will no longer be updated

This version won’t be updated anymore. You can switch to the new RPG Map 2 which gets rid of Flash and implements many features requested by users. The source code of the original ANA Map is available on GitHub.

About the old Flash version

IMPORTANT : you need a Flash Player for this version to work. So far it has been tested on Firefox 59 and Chrome. For Chrome, you may need to click this link for it to work and choose “Allow” when asked to run flash. If nothing shows, there might be an issue with the Flash player: you should check if it’s enabled and not blocked by any third party extension.

For the last 20 years, I’ve been playing tabletop RPGs with friends on a very regular basis. I’ve spent a huge amount of time writing scenarii and missions. I did it with traditional pen & papers at first, and with Google Docs afterwards.

Problem is: it’s ok to write missions with Google Docs, until it comes to drawing the map of, say, a dungeon in Dungeon & Dragons, or a haunted house in Call of Cthulhu. Most of the dedicated tools are either:

  • Old: like with a Win95 interface with almost zero attention to ergonomic
  • Bloated: the tools allows EVERY single thing related to drawing a map, and therefore, is too complicated for my simple needs.
  • Ugly: the tool uses lots of terrible textures where I just want to draw walls and doors.

For some times now, I’ve been using Photoshop to paint my maps. But let’s face it. It’s a great tool, but it has not been designed for that purpose. And it’s not free.

So I’ve decided to work on my own tool, with the sacred KiSS principle in mind (Keep it Short & Simple).

    Great tool, but i can't make big maps. As soon as I move the map, the part that leaves the screen gets deleted :(

    Sadly, every time I scroll the map downwards, anything that moved off the top of the screen vanishes… :( It's a shame, I really like it otherwise!

    I agree with Chara, if you can get this to work as an app or even a standalone software I would gladly pay for something like this.

    Hey man, I've been looking freaking everywhere to find some sort of mapping program that can be used for basic mapping. Simple, nothing so complicated I want to gouge my eyes out. This is simply amazing… I hope you decide to update it, I would pay MONEY for this, even as it is right now~ consider making a full blown download or google-web-app for this, thanks so much!

    Just saw you can move the map with the arrows keys…. I found a bug doing so: when pressed down, the top rooms that "falls off" the view are erased :(. I'm using chrome (v 56.0.2924.87 (64-bit)) on osx.

    Nice work! really loved this!

    It would be nice if we could make bigger maps…. and if there was a round object :)

    Thanks anyway!

    I agree with Tyllathine. Its good but holes, water, and a way to remove all walls with a click would be nice.

    Give me water tiles and different coloured furniture and I'll name my children after you

    Ugh. Worked on a map and only then found out that neither save nor export works under Chrome. IE only for those functions! :(

    Why is it that to make the map ALL WALLS? I had a hard time moving around and then suddenly their all walls Why?

  19. Hated:

    Quick question, can I zoom out? That would be really nice.

    Ditto some of these suggestions:
    * Custom furn sizes
    * 45-degree walls
    * Water
    would make this thing perfect. Probably easier said than done, but still. Thanks for an excellent map tool!
