Your sister, Lice, is held inside the Hammer Watch prisons. You must sneak inside and find her.

Beneath the City is a turn based stealth game where each move counts. My initial goal was to create a stealth roguelike using a 3D isometric view (see early screenshots). I finally switched to back to top-down view because of the timing and the controls (3D iso is no good with keyboard controls). Beneath the city lacks proper ending, and different enemies, but all the basics are here.

I really enjoyed this game. The mixture of stealth and puzzling was perfect.

    Great game.
So great that I decided to study it before the next ludum dare. But some files are missing. I know you wrote in the readme that it is not meant to be compilable. But still I'd like to know how everything works. Is there a place where can I find the missing libraries ?

Very cool, I would love to see more!

Is it just me or does the thief in this look a lot like a miniature version of Matthew the thief from fire emblem?

  7. Andrew

What a fun game. You did a great job and we'd love to see more!

Reanimating the sister as a boss bad guy would be a sweet twist.

Interesting an fresh. I like it!

Nicely done…really enjoy the Thief universe so it's a great little addition to the series :)

  10. Mucky

Incredible. Simple but fun, and had built up the right atmosphere despite its small scope.

    Definitely looking forward to more.

Really excellent, but more than anything else makes me crave a Thief-roguelike.

Loved it, I feel it was just challenging enough. The music was a great pace, and I hope you extend greatly on this particular game.

  17. Sam

A very charming game; I would rather like to see this become a full game :). Very good job!

This is fantastic! Any chance you'll make additional levels for this, or maybe even a level editor? I do love me stealth games after all, especially Thief.

  19. That guy

Mechanics, art, and music are all very well done, and in 48 hours at that. Very impressive.

Incredible I really enjoyed what you have made here!

holy shit i just checked out a few of your other games and every one i clicked on was brilliant too! big ups!

  22. strongmints

Hey this was awesome, it's like that game Ending but the stealth mechanics add a lot more than just pattern repetition, good job man, would definitely like to see this fleshed out more.

    This soundtrack is surprisingly relaxing.
Even getting some ASMR vibes from it!

I want a full game like this, only a few extra features would really warrant it a purchase me thinks. :) Thanks for the sneaky sneaks

  25. Walking Toothbrush

With an expanded plot and more levels/maps, this could easily make a full game. An increase in item and enemy types would be nice, but what is there gives it more of a challenging, puzzle-game feel that is already enjoyable.

  26. arsisnake

great game! there will be new episodes? Beneath the City 2? :D

  27. Dave Rodriguez

    Hey!
Great game, as always, but I'd really like to see a post-compo with more types of enemies and maybe more powerups and, of course, a proper ending.
Can't wait to read the post-mortem!

Yeah! It's great. I miss a little trinkets to steal, and special treasure in hidden locations, and such.

About the story, it is great for me to rescue a little sister, at least, is not the common damsel in distress where romance is hinted.

    Good work!

  29. Quintin

That was great. Left me wanting more.

  30. colcol

Great game! Would love to see the idea developed

  31. AluminumHaste

Awesome, better story than Thief 4 lol. And better gameplay.

  32. Bilal Abdul-Nabi

I came back to play this game again! The graphics, game play, story, and music all are just highly polished. I think this game is really awesome. Great job!

  33. Rythian

Hello! I quite enjoyed this, and I could easily see this becoming a full game, with expanded mechanics and a cool plot. Well done!

  34. Hi, thanks for your feedback, I can't agree more!
Actually, I would really like to make a full game of Beneath the City, and the plot probably won't be to save a damsel. I actually had to write something during the last few hours, so the result is this: stereotyped and not really interesting nor surprising. I will think of that on next version :)

  35. Bugbeard

This is terrific, I enjoyed the game a lot! Especially super solid design, visuals and atmosphere for something made in 48 hours! :D

  36. Damian

Wonderful!! Just wow!! :-) One criticsm though: It would be cool if you could avoid the two tropes regarding representation of woman in this game: The sister in your game is both used as a damsel in distress and a disposable damsel (see the Damsel in Distress Part 2 Tropes vs. Woman video from Anita Sarkeesian). I can understand that especially in this small amount of time you had, the first plots that come up are totally cliche ones. It's just the way the human brain works. But if you take your time to expand and finish your game, which I sincerely hope because of your wonderful thief-mechanics (!!), I would really appreciate it if you could avoid the stereotypes, cliches and tropes, which permeate way too much games in these times already.

  37. Taxouck

It's sad you did not had the time to make a proper ending :(
Anyway, the game concept was really great, and I would have liked more levels.

  38. Noaksey

Very Cool game, I would like to see what you would do with more time.

  39. Sublustris

    Great game. "Mini Thief" :)

    Amazing game :) Congratz
